Grocr — find the cheapest shop on the island: a live price check for free-range eggs across five Bermuda shops

The Problem

Groceries are one of the largest line items in a Bermuda household budget, and the most opaque. The same product can vary meaningfully in price between stores, but there is no way to see that at a glance. You either shop on habit or trudge between shops with a mental note of what cost what last time.

Every grocer already publishes its catalogue and prices online. The information exists — it is just scattered across separate sites with no common view, so nobody can actually compare.

The Approach

Grocr is "grocer" trimmed down: short, friendly, easy to type. It is an independent consumer tool — not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any store, and built to stay that way.

Most of Bermuda's grocers run on the same NCR Freshop e-commerce platform, each under its own key; another runs on eddress. Each exposes a public JSON API that the stores' own sites already call. Grocr reads those same endpoints, normalises every product to a common shape, and joins them across stores on UPC so a can of beans in one shop lines up with the same can in another.

The posture is a hard rule. Plain-text store names only — no logos, no brand colours. Every price carries a "may be out of date, confirm in store" note. The framing is always cost-of-living and price transparency, never "store X rips you off." And it is a good citizen of the upstream APIs: a real user agent, throttling, backoff, and hard caching.

How It Works

Search a product. Type what you're after and see the price at each store, with the cheapest highlighted. No app-hopping between four different websites.

Optimise a whole shop. Drop in a shopping list and Grocr works out the cheapest single store for the lot — and the best two-store split if dividing the trip saves you more.

Watch the trends. The ingest worker only records a price change when one actually happens, so history stays lean. That powers an on-sale feed, "good deal now" flags, and a Bermuda Basket Index that tracks the cost of a typical shop over time.

The Result

Grocr takes prices that are already public and turns them into the one thing shoppers actually want: the answer to "where is this cheapest, and what's the cheapest way to buy my whole list?"

It is built for an island where the cost of living is a constant conversation, and it keeps a deliberately neutral posture — a transparency tool for residents, not a marketing channel for any store. v1 launches with product search and basket optimisation; price history, sale alerts, and the Bermuda Basket Index follow.
